Three Star Report

Philadelphia has seven games left against Atlanta. It needs six of them.

Atlanta is 83-57 and leads the National League East by four games. Philadelphia is 79-61 with the same 22 games left to play. Four games back with 22 to go is a live race, and the schedule looks like Philadelphia’s way in, because seven of those 22 are against Atlanta.

All seven fall between Friday and September 13. Four in Philadelphia, then three in Atlanta eleven days from now. Whatever this race turns out to be, it turns into it inside the next two weeks.

A head to head game moves the standings by two, since one club’s win is the other’s loss. That cuts both ways, and the arithmetic of needing four games in seven meetings is harsher than it sounds. Split every other game and Philadelphia has to win six of the seven.

Here is that split, spelled out. Philadelphia has 15 games that are not against Atlanta and Atlanta has 15 that are not against Philadelphia. Give each club 7.5 wins from those, which is what splitting means. Philadelphia finishes on 79 plus its share of the meetings plus 7.5. Atlanta finishes on 83 plus the meetings it wins plus 7.5. Win five of seven and Philadelphia lands on 91.5 against 92.5. Win six and it is 92.5 against 91.5.

No chasing club in baseball has more of its schedule against the team ahead of it

Seven of 22 is 31.8 percent of what Philadelphia has left. Across all 24 clubs in baseball that are chasing a division leader, none has a larger share.

Texas is 1.5 back of Houston and has none left against them.

Texas is the other end of it

Texas sits 1.5 games out, closer than anyone on this chart, and has zero games left against Houston. It has to win its way past a club it never sees again.

Texas is worth a sentence for the contrast. The Rangers are 1.5 games out of first, closer than any club here, and they have no games left against Houston at all. They have to make up that ground on other opponents while Houston does whatever Houston does. Philadelphia at least gets to play the club it is chasing.

Atlanta needs two of the seven, and not for the division

Atlanta has already won the season series five games to one. The two clubs play 13 times in all, so Atlanta needs two of the remaining seven to clinch it.

That matters because Major League Baseball has settled division ties on the head to head record since 2022. There is no game 163 any more. If these two finish level on wins, the club that won the season series takes the division and the other one goes to the wild card round. Two more wins in those seven and Atlanta owns that tiebreaker no matter what happens after.

Six of seven is therefore the requirement twice over. Win six and Philadelphia also takes the season series seven games to six, which is the same six games.

What the odds actually say, and how much the schedule is worth

We simulated the last 22 games for every club in the division 100,000 times. Each game is a coin weighted by the two clubs’ records, with home field set to the .528 that home teams have actually posted across the 2,090 games played this season. Ties go to the head to head record, the way the league breaks them.

Atlanta wins the division in 90.3 percent of those seasons and Philadelphia in 9.7 percent.

That figure moves with how you rate the clubs, so here is the other reading rather than one number presented as settled. Rate the two by runs scored and allowed instead of by wins and losses, which strips out how they have done in close games, and Atlanta comes out at 94.6 percent against Philadelphia’s 5.4. The direction is identical under both. The size is not, and anyone quoting a single number for this is quoting a choice.

Then we ran it again with the seven meetings replaced by seven games against an average opponent, same count and same ballparks, to price the schedule on its own. Philadelphia’s chances fall from 9.7 percent to 6.9 under the win based rating, and from 5.4 to 3.8 under the run based one.

So the seven games against Atlanta are worth somewhere around two to three percentage points to Philadelphia. It is the largest schedule edge any chaser in baseball has and it is close to a rounding error against a four game deficit.

What would have to be true

Philadelphia has the best schedule available to a club in its position and it is still four games short. What it needs is to play much better than it has for six weeks, and to do it while Atlanta stops winning.

Atlanta is 9-4 since August 20 and has outscored its opponents by 118 runs on the season. Philadelphia is plus 36. A four game lead held by the club with the better run differential and the head to head tiebreaker already in hand does not leak away quietly.

The seven games will decide it, and they will probably decide it the way the first six already did.

I’m a fan of these teams, not a neutral observer.
